Ripe, free, blackberries

I went blackberry picking on Sunday and got a half bucket full of blackberries. It is pretty early in the picking season, and I know there are many more picks to come. Perhaps I will let my scratches and splinters heal. I have a few great picking spots with plenty of bounty.

Recently I discovered making galette and my family loves it. I have made blueberry, wild berry and soon I will make blackberry. I actually want to make a bunch of hand pies for my son’s school lunches. Galette was something previously brought to a food swap.

My mom is making jam with hers, but I have been making fruit leather. I now have a variety of fruit flavors that I am squirrling away for school lunch boxes all winter. I have apricot, peach, nectarine, strawberry, blueberry and now blackberry. I am considering canning some juice as well.

I am not sure what to make for the next swap. I think I will bring some fresh bay leaves from my tree. I am also drying some herbs for teas – lemon balm and chocolate mint.

What are you making with your blackberries?
